About Rusty Shelton
Founder and Chairman at Zilker Media
Rusty Shelton first spoke at Harvard on the changing world of marketing and PR at the age of 23. He is the founder and chairman of Zilker Media, an Austin-based agency building people-driven brands. Rusty founded Zilker Media in 2017 and served as the company’s first CEO prior to transitioning to the Chairman role in 2019.
Prior to founding Zilker Media, Rusty built and sold two successful businesses before the age of 35. He launched his first business, Shelton Interactive, in 2010 and developed a strong team that grew it into one of the nation’s most respected digital marketing agencies. The company handled the launch of more than 30 New York Times & Wall Street Journal bestsellers and represented some of the world’s most recognized authorities, including Gary Keller, Sally Hogshead, Ram Charan, Chicken Soup for the Soul & many others. Shelton Interactive was also named one of the nation’s top 10 social media marketing agencies in 2014 and 2015 by research agency Clutch. In 2016, Rusty’s first business was acquired by Advantage Media Group, where he continues to also serve as the senior marketing strategist.
Rusty is passionate about teaching others how to make a bigger impact and grow their business with people-driven marketing. He co-authored Authority Marketing (ForbesBooks, 2018) with Advantage Media Group Founder & CEO, Adam Witty. Authority Marketing has a foreword by Steve Forbes and explores the seven pillars of Authority Marketing to build thought leadership and dominate your competition. He also co-authored Mastering the New Media Landscape: Embrace the Micromedia Mindset (Berrett-Koehler, 2016) with Cave Henricks Communications Founder & CEO Barbara Cave Henricks. Their book debuted at number two on the Austin American-Statesman bestseller list and was endorsed by David Meerman Scott, Tom Rath, Sally Hogshead and many more.
Rusty speaks regularly at top conferences like SXSW Interactive, Financial Planning Conference (FPA), Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) and also EO & YPO groups around the country. He has been a faculty member at the Harvard Medical School Publishing Course for over 15 years. Rusty has also received high-level media coverage in Forbes, Inc., Wharton, HuffPost and more.
Rusty received a bachelor of science in business and corporate communications from the University of Texas at Austin. An avid Texas Longhorns fan, he sits on the University of Texas Texas Exes PR Committee and is a proud member of the Entrepreneur's Organization (EO) in Austin. In his spare time, Rusty enjoys playing golf, fishing and coaching his kids’ sports teams.
